Course description:

What is sound? What is a city? What does your New York sound like? These are some of the questions that we will begin to address in this course. By learning to appreciate our environments through close listening, we will explore our everyday environments and collect the sounds that define the borders and cracks of our personal and collective experiences. Students will learn to make digital recordings and pieces detailing their impressions and perceptions of The City, as well as learn to put these recordings online. Along the way, skills for recording sound for film, radio and public broadcast, as well as digital editing and mixing will be acquired. A comprehensive look into the history of sound, as well as contemporary uses, will take the class to museums, galleries, concerts and the streets of New York. Additionally, students will be given the opportunity to show their works to the public in a performance at the end of the year.
